How to Choose an Ayurvedic Spa in Ubud: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Why asking questions matters

Choosing an Ayurvedic spa in Ubud is about more than atmosphere — it’s about safety, fit and results. This guide gives nine specific questions to ask any spa so you can compare offerings reliably (including consultation style, therapist skill, products, facilities, and aftercare). Use these when you call, email, or review a spa’s website before committing your time and money.

1) Do you have a formal Ayurvedic consultation?

A proper intake with an Ayurvedic practitioner or doctor is the foundation of a tailored plan. Ask whether an on‑site practitioner assesses pulse, asks about your health and lifestyle, and makes clear recommendations rather than selling add‑ons. One guest reported a thorough consultation that included pulse assessment and a treatment recommendation — a helpful model of what to expect when a spa follows authentic Ayurvedic practice.

2) What training and experience do your therapists have?

Therapist skill matters more than décor. Ask how therapists were trained, how long they have practiced specific Ayurvedic therapies (Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Takradhara, etc.), and whether they follow an in‑house protocol for consistency. Also ask how therapists check in during a treatment about pressure and comfort; attentive therapists who adjust their technique create safer, more effective sessions.

3) What oils and products do you use?

Oils are central to Ayurvedic treatments. Ask whether oils are herbal or medicated, where they are sourced, and whether the spa can share ingredient basics if you have allergies or sensitivities. Guests commonly mention the scent and nourishing feel of the oils used; confirming oil type beforehand helps you avoid reactions and ensures the treatment matches Ayurvedic intentions.

4) How clean and well‑equipped are the treatment rooms?

Hygiene and comfort are non‑negotiable. Ask about room cleaning practices, availability of private en‑suite showers or changing areas, and whether treatment rooms have temperature control or steam facilities. Several visitors have highlighted luxurious, immaculately maintained showers and dedicated steam chambers — details that make post‑treatment care and comfort easier.

5) Can you accommodate noise sensitivity or timing requests?

One guest noted temporary construction noise near a Ubud spa, which affected their ability to fully relax. If you’re sensitive to sound, ask whether treatment rooms face quieter areas, whether the spa can schedule treatments at quieter times, and whether music or white noise can be used to mask external sounds. Confirm how the spa manages interruptions in general so you won’t be surprised on the day.

6) What aftercare and dietary support do you provide?

A good Ayurvedic visit continues after the table. Ask whether the practitioner gives post‑treatment guidance (diet, sleep, lifestyle tips), whether meals are provided after longer treatments, and if the spa supports follow‑up questions. Many guests appreciate complementary light meals and personalized food recommendations after sessions — a practical sign the spa considers whole‑person care.

7) Pricing, packages, booking and practical details

Before you book, ask for transparent pricing, what each package includes (duration, meals, consultations), cancellation policy, and whether you can request therapist gender or a quieter room. Ask about arrival time needs and whether the location is easy to find — some visitors note lanes can be tucked away, so double‑check directions. With these questions answered you’ll be able to compare spas in Ubud confidently and choose one that fits your needs and expectations.

Customer review

I stayed at this hotel on a solo trip and was treated to an extraordinary experience at the Ayurvedic spa. I have to say I knew very little about Ayurveda before I came here so it was fascinating to learn the origins and health benefits. I had a consultation with the on site doctor who was very informative and explained about the principles of Ayurveda, checked my pulse and asked a series of questions about my health and lifestyle so he could recommend the right treatment. He didn’t try to sell me anything at all and was very professional, which was an unexpected but wonderful surprise. I then had the Abhyanga massage and Herbal Steam Bath on his recommendation. which was performed by the male therapist in the lovely spa area downstairs. This whole property is newly built so the spa facilities are immaculate and beautifully decorated just like the rest of the resort. The massage involved lots of hot herbal oil and felt relaxing. The therapist opted to do the front first and then the back of the body which was unusual but I don’t suppose makes a difference. He checked with me about the pressure to ensure it was to my liking, which it was- not the strongest but suitable for relaxation and in line with what I wanted that day given I had had a lot of massages while in Bali. The steam bath involves being helped while naked (apart from the paper pants) in a wooden chamber with herb infused steam being pumped in- like a stream room but just for your body and your head is outside the box so you can breath freely. It was supposed to be for 10 minutes in total I think. I had to stop after 8 minutes as I was getting a little too hot and unable to relax but the therapist was attentive and checking my comfort levels so it was no issue to stop a little early. I then had a shower in the en suite bath room attached to the treatment room and didn’t feel rushed at all so washed my hair with the Indian scented and nourishing shampoo and conditioner provided. I would highly recommend this spa for a truly luxurious Ayurvedic experience… or if you just want to experience a different kind of spa and feel pampered!! Do leave time to try the restaurant food too- it’s exquisite, and you can get personal food recommendations based on your health concerns and tastes/ I feel blessed to have experienced it and can still smell the oil blend on my skin, the sign of quality products. Thank you :)
